Fall 2020 DRAFT

Academic Room Scheduling

These are DRAFT Finals schedules. Please email Jill Freuden if you have suggestions or see obvious conflicts. These are NOT the official Finals Schedules for Fall 2020. Those will be released on March 2, 2020 if approved. The number of students projected is based on Enrollment Capacity listed in myWSU not actual enrollment.

Projected Finals: Fall 2020

This projected schedule ends finals on Friday at 1pm and balances the number of students taking finals over Monday-Thursday. Morning classes are generally taking morning finals. The 4 credit time slots are updated to eliminate overlapping times in the previous template.

This is what the finals schedule will look like if the changes are not approved. This schedule uses the template that has been in place for many years. Changes on this include removing the last Friday night block final time and adjusting the overall times to avoid overlapping times for 4 credit courses.

Explanations

As you know, one of our scheduling goals has been to reduce Friday finals in Pullman starting Fall 2020. The provosts office will be looking at our projected changes, but in the meantime, I thought I'd seek your input, too. I've attached two versions:

  • The "red" version is what finals would look like if we didn't do anything different for Fall 2020.
  • The "black" projected version is what we are proposing.

Both version include modified times starting at 1pm to eliminate the overlap that is in the current schedule and to give a full 2 or 3 hours for each final. There is not space between the 4 credit exams; I couldn't find a solution that didn't eliminate an entire time slot. I've been told that most 3 hour exams end shy of the full time and this is of limited concern. If you feel differently, let me know.

Here are some notes on the projected version:

  • The last final ends Friday at 1pm. We were able to eliminate the last three slots on Fridays.
  • The time of the final more closely matches when the time of the course. For instance, morning courses are more likely to have morning finals.
  • The color-coded numbers show the number of seats in use during each finals period. Red numbers are larger, green smaller. The daily seats listed in black/white as Total Seats. These are based on Enrollment Capacity not actual enrollment.
  • The seats are more evenly spread across Monday-Thursday. Friday is the light seat day.
  • The new times should mean fewer conflicts for 4 day/week courses, such as foreign language courses. These are noted as "daily". This is dependent on using the new finals times.
  • There may be fewer conflicts as there is no "heavy seat" day. In the original schedule, one rotating day, Wednesday for Fall 2020, has 25% more students taking exams than other days.
  • Of course, they may be other conflicts, as the times were rearranged and are generally more compressed.

As I mentioned, this is just a draft, so please feel free to email me your comments.
